Adejuwon Soyinka
Adejuwon Soyinka, is a two-time Emmy nominated, multiple award winning investigative journalist, television documentary producer and Regional Editor (West Africa) at The Conversation Africa, where he looks after teams in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal.
Soyinka also freelances as executive producer for the BBC Africa Eye and India Eye – two distinct, multi- award winning investigative TV units in the BBC.
One of the most accomplished media figures from West Africa, with an incredible track record of exposing organised crime, corruption and human rights abuses in the region, Soyinka has vast experience in digital, broadcast and print journalism, which includes being the pioneer editor of the BBC Pidgin Service - a new BBC department as part of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s expansion of the World Service in Africa.
He has been a mentor to many staff members in the BBC, who worked with him as an editor in Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon between 2017 and 2021.
Soyinka is passionate about storytelling. He uses investigative and explanatory journalism as a tool for social justice and equity.
Unarguably one of the most decorated Nigerian journalists, Soyinka got his first International Emmy Awards nomination in 2019, for his undercover reporting role in "Sweet, sweet codeine," a BBC investigative news documentary that exposed the criminal gangs behind a codeine drug abuse epidemic in Nigeria.
It was the first International Emmys nomination for a Nigerian journalist in the News and Current Affairs category and the first for the BBC World Service in the same category.
One year after the codeine investigative piece, he was Executive producer of "Sex for Grades," yet another major investigative piece that caused more than a ripple in Nigeria, Ghana and across Africa. The story was the number one Twitter trend globally on the day it was published in October 2019.
That story got him his second International Emmy nomination in the News and Current Affairs category in 2020.
In addition to the Emmys, Soyinka has won 12 journalism awards including the One World Media Award for best investigative documentary, the Nigerian Media Merits Awards, Wole Soyinka Prize for Investigative Journalism and Diamond Awards for Media Excellence.
In the course of his over 25 years of experience as a journalist, editor and newsroom manager, Soyinka has also secured 11 journalism award nominations including the Royal Television Society Award, the British Journalism Awards, an Association of International Broadcasting Award and a Grierson British Documentary Award.
Soyinka is currently a UK-based Global Talent in the field of film and television.
